Back to school time means your house will soon be overrun by backpacks, books, and papers! And with winter just around the corner, the salty residue left by snow boots, gloves will quickly make a mess of your floors. Mudrooms, like this one in our Bluffdale model home, are perfect for containing that clutter and mess at the door.  Here are three quick organizing tips to help you manage the mud:

1.  Get Organized

Tools like hooks, baskets, drawers, and trays are important pieces in your mudroom. Wall hooks keep those coats, scarves, and backpacks off the floor. Baskets above and below are terrific for hats, gloves, and shoes. Trays and hanging folders collect papers and knick-knacks. We can’t stress it enough, these tools are key to keeping this space clean, tidy and organized!

2.  Everything In Its Place

Look at your space to determine where everything should go. Once you have your hooks, baskets, drawers and trays in place, assign items to fit in each spot and label them!  Get super organized by assigning specific hooks, baskets, and trays to each family member. The more detailed the better!

 3.  Take It Out… Put It Back

If you get it out, put it back… in the same spot… every time. This part requires a bit of discipline, but organizational expert we’ve researched emphasizes this step for successful, long-term organization. In fact, putting things where they belong should become a habit.  It will completely be worth the initial nagging. Trust us!

Here are a few other great suggestions we found on the tatortotsandjello.com blog:

  • Get a key box to hold all your car keys. No more wondering where your keys are!
  • Get an outdoor/indoor rug for the floor of your mudroom. It will catch all of the wet snow and salt before it gets tracked into your house.
  • Keep some Clorox wipes in the mudroom for unexpected quick clean ups.

These steps are simple yet effective! Let us know what you think.
