Beautiful walk-in showers – whether built alongside a tub or a standalone larger shower – are a very hot trend in master bathroom design. While there are many benefits to these amazing showers, they also come with some challenges. One big challenge can be keeping the beautiful glass doors and wall panels clean. Here are a few ideas to clean your glass and make it shine.

Vinegar and Water

White vinegar is a popular choice for at-home cleaning solutions for shower glass, and the simplest method is vinegar and water. Real Simple gives the following advice on using vinegar and water to clean shower glass:

  • Combine 1 part vinegar with 3 parts distilled water in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for 60 seconds.
  • Let mixture cool, then pour into a spray bottle.
  • Spray onto shower glass, covering surface completely.
  • Let the solution sit for 3 to 5 minutes.
  • Working from top to bottom, use a microfiber cloth to dry the door. Once dry, use the cloth to buff out any streaks or smudges, then leave the door open to ensure any excess moisture is evaporated.

**Note on cleaning with vinegar: The acidic nature of vinegar could damage some natural stones, such as marble, granite, and limestone. If you have these in your shower, use extreme caution and keep vinegar off of the stone or avoid using vinegar to clean.**

Vinegar and Baking Soda

Cleaning company Molly Maid suggests the following vinegar and baking soda method:

  • Wet shower glass with the shower sprayer or splashing the glass with a bucket.
  • Fill a spray bottle with white vinegar and use it to thoroughly saturate the glass.
  • Let the vinegar soak in for at least 10 minutes (longer if there’s buildup).
  • Dip a sponge in baking soda and scrub the glass. The baking soda acts as an abrasive, while the vinegar dissolves the hard water spots and soap scum.
  • When you’re satisfied the glass is clean, rinse it off with fresh water.
  • Dry the glass with a microfiber cloth. Use glass cleaner to finish the cleaning.

Vinegar and Dawn Dish Soap

The Home Like You Mean It blog has several options using vinegar, including this one that mixes equal parts vinegar and blue Dawn dish soap:

  • Heat up 1 cup of vinegar in the microwave.
  • Mix vinegar with 1 cup of blue Dawn dish soap.
  • Pour solution into a spray bottle and spray directly onto the glass, covering the glass entirely.
  • Massage solution into the glass using a scrub brush.
  • Let the solution sit on the doors.
  • Rinse off.
  • Dry with a microfiber cloth or squeegee

Lemon and Baking Soda

In addition to recommending vinegar, Better Homes & Gardens has a lemon and baking soda option that they say will eliminate streaks and give a residue-free clean:

  • Cut a lemon in half and dip the cut side into baking soda.
  • Rub the cut/baking soda side on both sides of the glass door/wall. The lemon’s acid reacts with the baking soda, making a sudsy foam.
  • Rinse and dry with a microfiber cloth.
  • Once the glass is clean, you can rub the glass with lemon oil, which will repel water.

Other Cleaning Options

Here are a few other options we found that may work for you:

  • Magic Eraser: If you have hard-water stains, this may be a great option.
  • Dryer Sheets: Moistened dryer sheets can remove soap scum and other buildup on glass. Use a paper towel or cloth soaked in warm water to rinse the glass after cleaning with the dryer sheet.
  • Pine Sol and an Old T-Shirt: Mix Pine Sol with water (Pine Sol website suggests 1/8 cup of Pine Sol in 1/2 gallon water) in a spray bottle, spray it on the glass, then wipe down with an old T-shirt.

Keep Your Glass Clean Between Cleanings

Once you have the glass well cleaned and sparkling, there are a couple of things you can do to keep it that way between cleanings:

  • Use a squeegee or microfiber cloth after every shower to clean water off and keep your glass looking clean.
  • Use a microfiber cloth to apply Rain-X onto freshly cleaned glass to help keep water spots off the glass.
