“Mom, I’m bored!” Every parent has heard that many times, and that’s especially true during big family events such as Thanksgiving. We can’t guarantee these Thanksgiving-themed activities will completely eliminate “Mom, I’m bored,” but here are five ideas for fun activities that may help keep boredom at bay on turkey day.
Scavenger Hunt
Create a list of fall or Thanksgiving themed objects for kids to look for, and turn them loose. If the weather isn’t too bad, do an outdoor scavenger hunt that could include things like a different colored leaves, pine cones, and so on. Stuck indoors? Make paper turkeys and hide them around the house, use the fall décor you already have up as items, and anything else you may have around that would be interesting in a hunt. Up the ante on the hunt by giving out small prizes to those who finish first.
Coloring Table
Who doesn’t love to color? This easy to plan activity will keep kids (young and old) entertained for hours. A quick online search for free Thanksgiving coloring pages will give you a ton of options to print out. Just print a bunch of copies, add crayons, and you have a coloring table. Want an even simpler options? Cover a table with a large sheet of paper and let everyone create a masterpiece from scratch.
Thanksgiving Bingo
Another easy option if you have a computer and printer. We found some free printable bingo cards on the Crazy Little Projects blog that you can print out and have ready for the kids. Make sure you have something for the kids to use to mark the squares and someone to draw and call out the pieces. Want to give it a go? Word Search
Word searches are another quick, easy activity that will keep kids occupied for a while. Again, you can do a quick online search to find some printable word searches with Thanksgiving themes. Or, The Spruce Crafts blog has links to 25 Thanksgiving word searches of varying difficulty so you can find one that works for kids of all ages. You can find the links here.
Photo Booth
If you have a little more time to plan ahead and enough space in your home, try a Thanksgiving photo booth. A blank wall can serve as the backdrop – either leave it blank or add some decorations to the backdrop. Then, gather up some Thanksgiving and fall props everyone can use for photos. This is another instance where the internet and a printer can come in handy. You can print out fall or Thanksgiving themed art, add craft sticks to the back of them, and everyone can use them for photo props. Use your phone or a tablet to take photos. You can either have people take turns being photographer, or you can get a tripod and one of the apps that gives you options for photo booths.
