Need some artwork for your home but don’t have a lot of money to buy something amazing? Why not make your own? Here are five easy and inexpensive art projects.
Pixelized Artwork
From Better Homes & Gardens’ 16 DIY Wall Art Ideas (you can see all 16 here), this art piece just requires some plywood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and craft paint. To make it yourself:
- Sand and clean the wood panel
- Use a pencil to mark off a grid of same-size squares
- Arrange craft paints in the same color palette from light to dark.
- Assign each square a color, keeping lighter colors at the bottom and darker colors and the top.
- Tape off and paint each square, letting each dry before starting the next.
If you want to make some squares more transparent, add water to the paint for a watercolor effect.
Botanical Prints
Another great idea from the folks at Better Homes & Gardens, you’ll need cold-press board for your background, silk or plastic greenery as a stencil, spray paint, and a frame for each print you will be creating. Tape Art
What do you get when you combine a canvas with painters tape and acrylic paint? A cool, modern-looking art piece that can be customized to fit your color scheme and style preferences. You can find full instructions and info here, but the basics are this:
- Apply painters tape to your canvas in any pattern you’d like. You can do stripes, triangles, chevron pattern, squares, and so on. Make sure all tape is straight and there are no air bubbles in the tape, which will allow paint to seep through.
- Apply paint to the canvas in whatever pattern and manner you think looks best.
- Allow painting to dry a few hours or overnight.
- Remove the tape.
Paint Chip Circle Art
Would you rather not do any painting for your artwork? Try paint chips instead! You’ll need a large hole punch to cut the circles out of the 30 paint chips you gather. Then, measure out a grid on your background paper, then use Mod Podge to attach the paint chip circles to the paper. Finish it off by putting it in a frame with a matte. Drywall Canvas Art with Drywall Mud
Not a great painter? Feel like you may be artistically challenged? This canvas art using drywall mud may be perfect for you! You’ll need a blank canvas (you can even use an old canvas that you no longer want and cover it with white paint before starting), joint compound (aka drywall mud), trowels, spray paint, and wood pieces if you want to frame the canvas out.
