Whether your bathroom is large or small, it likely tends to get a bit cluttered from time to time. From every day essentials to linens, there is a lot that is needed in the bathroom. Finding places for all of that stuff can be a challenge, but with a little thought and effort, you can get an organized bathroom. Here are 10 tips for organizing your bathrooms.

Declutter and Measure First

That cold medicine that expired two years ago? Yeah, you don’t need that anymore, and it’s probably not alone in the “don’t need” category. Before you do anything, including buying new storage items to get organized, declutter your bathroom. Remove everything from drawers, cabinets, etc. Get rid of anything that’s expired or that you no longer need. This will help you determine what to keep, how much space you need for everything, and what type of storage bins, baskets, etc. you need to organize everything.

Once you have decluttered, measure all of your drawers, cabinets, and other spaces where you will be placing the items you kept and need to organize. This will allow you to create a plan for where to put things and what organization items you need.

Use Drawer Dividers/Bins

Drawers can become one of the biggest challenge areas in a bathroom because it is easy to just toss things in them. But as time goes on and you add more to the drawers, the harder it is to find what you need easily. Using drawer dividers or bins will give you specific space within a drawer for various items, keeping them organized and easy to find. How you divide a drawer is really up to you because it depends on what items you have and the size of both them and the drawers. Another great in-drawer organizer to consider is a magnetic strip attached to the side of the drawer. This will keep things like bobby pins, barrettes, and fingernail clippers organized and easy to find.

If you are trying to figure out how to divide the drawer, one helpful tip is to use paper cutouts. Once you have the drawer dividers or bins, cut paper the size to the size of the dividers/bins, then place the pieces down in the drawer until you find a layout that works well for your needs.

Go Vertical

Bathrooms often don’t have a ton of storage space, so you need to maximize it as much as possible. Going vertical is the way to do that. To get the most out of your under-cabinet space, buy stacking bins or drawers. Don’t just look for bathroom-specific storage bins or drawers – ones that are typically used in pantries or elsewhere can work here as well.

Using vertical space doesn’t just apply to cabinets. If you are in need of additional storage space in the bathroom. Adding shelves or a cabinet to the area above your toilet, which is often just an empty space, is a great option. Look at other wall areas that could also accommodate shelves or a cabinet. Some creative things we’ve seen that add storage to walls: Adding a shelf above the door for extra towels, using spice racks to add storage on smaller wall areas, and use pegboards and accessories.

Lazy Susans for Easy Access

Another great option for inside cabinets or elsewhere is a lazy Susan. If you have a lot of bottled items to organize, putting them on a lazy Susan creates automatic organization and makes it easy to access everything. Tip: Place larger bottles in the center or at the edges to make it easier to see everything on the lazy Susan.

Don’t Forget the Back of Doors

The backside of doors is an often-overlooked area where you can gain storage in any room. You can hooks to the back of the main door into the bathroom where you can hang towels, robes, and other items or use smaller bins to the inside of cabinet doors for additional storage

Label, Label, Label

Not only does labeling your storage bins, drawers, etc., look nice, it also makes it much easier to find what you need quickly. You may remember where everything is located, but chances are you aren’t the only one who will be searching for things. Make it easier on everyone by adding labels.

Consider Getting an Appliance Organizer

Hair dryers, curling irons, flat irons, and other bathroom appliances (and their sometimes long cords) can take up a fair amount of space in vanities or on countertops, where they can look quite messy. Instead of taking up valuable space in a vanity or having appliances and cords strewn everywhere, consider purchasing an organizer specifically made for hair appliances. Even if you need to place it on a countertop, it will look nice and organized.

Use a Tray on Countertops

If you don’t like the look of hand soap, lotion, hand/table mirrors, and other items on the counter, consider using a tray to corral them and keep them looking a bit tidier. Don’t use a tray as an excuse to add more to the countertops, though. Too much on the countertops makes the bathroom look messy and unkempt.

Consider Hooks Instead of Towel Bars

How hard is it to put a towel on a towel bar? Well, based on the number of towels that end up on bathroom floors, apparently it can be a challenge at times. If your family struggles with hanging towels back up on bars, consider adding hooks in place of the bars. This should make it easier for everyone to put towels back up when done with them.

Alternative Ways to Add Storage in a Shower/Bath Tub

Need additional space for shampoo, conditioner, shaving items, etc. in your shower or bath tub but don’t like the look of a caddy hanging from the shower head? If you have wall space above your surround, add a hook there and hang the caddy on the hook instead. Another option is to add a sturdy tension rod along a wall, then use S-hooks to hang your caddy, a loofah, and anything else that can hang. One note on the tension rod method: Do not place it against a glass wall. The tension from the rod can over time create enough pressure to crack the glass. Only use this if you have two solid surfaces, such as wall space, a surround, or tile where the rod can hang.

If you have a shower curtain, another great option is to hang a shower pocket organizer (or a shoe organizer) on the same hooks as your shower curtain. Face it inside the shower/tub and store your necessities in the pockets for easy access.
