Did you know that your dishwasher has a filter in it that needs to be cleaned regularly? The filter is designed to catch food particles and other debris, and it can build up over time and clog it. A clogged filter can affect the performance and even potentially damage the mechanical components in the dishwasher. The good news is you can easily prevent this by cleaning the filter regularly – a process that can take less than an hour.

Step 1: Locate the Filter

In most instance, the filter is located in the tub in the bottom of the dishwasher, but you’ll want to check your manufacturer’s manual for the exact location in yours. The filter is cylindrical shaped that can be twisted out.

Step 2: Remove the Filter

To remove the filter, turn it a quarter turn counterclockwise and pull it out gently. Using too much force can damage the filter, which can impact the dishwasher’s performance.

Step 3: Rinse the Filter

Give the filter a quick rinse to remove any loose debris.

Step 4: Soak Filter in Soapy Water

Fill your sink with warm water and a squirt or two of dishwashing liquid, then submerge the filter in the cleaning solution. Let it soak for about 15 minutes.

Step 5: Scrub the Filter

Check the filter when you pull it out of the water for stuck-on food and soap scum. If there is any debris still on the filter, scrub it off using a stiff-bristled brush. If the filter looks clean and free of debris, skip this step.

Step 6: Rinse the Filter

Run the filter under hot water until it is completely clean and water runs through it freely.

Step 7: Check Area Where Filter Goes

Before reinstalling the filter, check the area where it goes for any debris or food particles. If you find debris and food particles in that area, use a damp paper towel or sponge to wipe the area clean.

Step 8: Reinstall Filter

Place the filter back in its hole in the dishwasher and turn it clockwise a quarter turn to secure it back in place.

Keeping the Filter Clean

While it’s impossible to keep a filter perfectly clean and never have to clean it again, there are ways to help prevent a lot of build-up and extend the time between cleanings:

  • Scrape and rinse dishes before you put them in the dishwasher. The few food particles on dishes, the less there is to get clogged in the filter.
  • Clean the entire dishwasher periodically. There are special cleaning tablets you can use, or Google how to clean your dishwasher for step by step guidance on cleaning it yourself.
  • Clean the sprayer arm(s) while you are also cleaning the filter. If the spray nozzles get clogged with dirt, that can eventually dislodge and end up on dishes or the filter.
