There is plenty of prep work you can do in your garden now!

If you’re like me, you’re longing for sunny spring days and the earthy scent of a garden in bloom.  Fret not, fellow urban farmer!  Here is a list of steps to take now to prep your soil for planting season.

Clear & Compost

If you haven’t already, this is a great time to clear your garden of detritus from your 2015 harvest.  Pull those dead plants and old tomato cages and lay down a nice layer of compost before the next snow.  The compost will spend the winter breaking down so you can mix it into your soil when spring comes.

Rebuild & Repair

Those tomato cages you just pulled from the garden?  Now is the time to make sure they’re ready for a new summer crop.  Clean and repair your gardening materials and tools and build any boxes, trellises and fences you’ll need for the year.

Plan & Plant

As you dream of pristine rows of kale and carrots, take out a pen and paper and sketch your garden plan.  Grab “The Old Farmer’s Almanac” and study up on complementary plants to help you create a great design for a bountiful harvest.  This is also the perfect time to order your seeds!

Hopefully these tips will help you through what remains of winter and ready your garden for a wonderfully productive season!
