According to Thumbtack, one of the most popular indoor fall/winter home projects is organization. If you want to tackle an organization project that isn’t huge (and overwhelming) and can also make a big impact, start with one drawer. We all have that one drawer … the junk drawer that becomes a catch-all for things we don’t quite know what to do with. It’s very easy to just throw things in and move on, but before you know it, that drawer can be a chaotic mess where it can be challenging to find things when you actually need them. A little time and a few simple steps can help you take the junk drawer from chaotic mess to organized beauty.

Remove Everything from the Drawer

Start by emptying the drawer entirely. This will help you see what all you have in it and give you the chance to declutter and get rid of things you don’t really need. While everything is out of the drawer, wipe it clean so you can start with a clean surface. Now is also a great time to line the bottom of the drawer if you so choose. Lining the drawer can make future clean-up easier, and you can got for a patterned liner to add character.

Sort and Organize Items in Piles

Once you’ve gotten rid of things you don’t need and have a pile of items to keep, the next step is to sort them. Group like items that you want to store together into piles. As you do this, you may find there are things that don’t really belong in the drawer any longer. Set these aside for now, then come back to them later and find an alternate home.

Plan and Get Storage Solutions

Measure the width, height, and depth of your drawer so you know how much space you have with which to work. This, along with the piles you made of your items, will help you determine what type of storage containers to use in your drawer. There are many options from which to choose, including expand-a-drawer organizers, a multi-section drawer organizer, plastic baskets and boxes, and things like muffin tins, ice cube trays, and makeup trays. While it may be tempting to go for the most inexpensive option, in this instance, you may want to spend a little extra to ensure fit and long-term effective organization.

Arrange Your Items in the Drawer

Once you have the tools to organize, the final step is to, well, organize. Take the items you grouped and organize them in the drawer. You don’t need everything to be perfectly placed and visible. As long as you group items in a way that works for you, a mishmash will still work. The key is to know what you have and where to find it when you need it.
