Spring has now officially sprung! That means grass is coming back to life and the flowers will soon bloom. However, it all needs a little help to look its best, and now is the time to start doing the work, so your yard will look amazing this summer! Here are a few tips on preparing your lawn and garden for Spring.
Start With Cleaning
The first step to preparing your lawn or garden for spring is to clean. Rake up leaves, twigs, and other debris that may have accumulated on your lawn, and pick up any debris and trash that may have accumulated in garden areas. This will give you a nice, clean slate to start with and ensure fertilizer and other steps taken will be effective.
Apply Fertilizer, Pre-Emergent, and Weed Killer
After winter, your lawn needs to be fed, and that’s where fertilizer comes in, but you need to consider more than just fertilizer. The best time to stop weeds and crabgrass is before they even emerge – in other words, now. Pre-emergent will help prevent crabgrass, and, of course, a broad weed killer will help prevent weeds. Many brands offer a pre-emergent and weed killer in one application, saving time and energy.
Aerate Your Lawn
To help make it easier for oxygen, water, and nutrients to easily reach roots, aerate your lawn. You can do this in the traditional way using a spike aerator tool or use a soil conditioner product.
Mow Often
As your grass starts growing, especially with the help of fertilizer, you will need to mow more often. If you let the grass grow too much before mowing, you risk stunting the growth because roots cannot reproduce properly.
Get Sprinkler System Ready
If you have an automatic sprinkler system, now is the time to get it back up and running. Make sure you set aside plenty of time to properly check everything and make repairs as needed. Run all sprinklers and check for broken sprinkler heads and leaks around sprinklers.
Trim Trees, Bushes, and Shrubs
If you didn’t prune before winter, now is a great time to do so. It’s especially important to trim dead limbs off of trees to avoid potential damage from them falling later.
Apply Mulch
Adding mulch around the base of plants, trees, shrubs, and emerging bulbs and perennials will help moderate soil temperature and moisture and help deter weeds. Not to mention, it’s a great look for your yard overall.
